General water point characteristics

In total, 20,205 data points have been collected during the 2017 water point survey. Of all the improved water points, 9674 (64.1%) are technically fully functional and in use, 1408 (9.3%) are functional but not in use for drinking water, 1145 (7.6%) are functional but with problems, and 2733 (18.1%) are broken down. Of the 9674 improved water points reported to be fully functional and in use for drinking water (‘functional water points’ as described in Section 2.2), 9058 (60.0% of all improved water points) are reported to have clean water.

Types of water points

The table below shows the totals for each type of water point and whether the point is considered improved or unimproved. We distinguished improved from unimproved water sources according to the JMP/ WHO definition.

Water pump types

The large majority of 11796 (89.1%) of the water points for which a pump type was reported has an Afridev pump. In the table below, the different pump types and their functionality are listed for those water points for which a pump type was reported.

Seasonality

Regarding seasonality, 6560 (43.5%) of all fully functional water points are reported to have water throughout the year. As you can see in the table below, seasonal water unavailability of 1 or 2 months is the most common, but seasonality of up to 6 months is also common.

Water quality tests

Coliform contamination is the main water quality issue – Of the water points for which a coliform test was performed, 65.9% of the measured water points was safe, 20.6% had intermediate risk, 10.6% had high risk, and 2.9% had very high risk according to WHO definitions. Addressing E.coli contamination with ongoing efforts of water treatment is needed to address this. Of the other parameters, iron was above the limit in many cases.Regarding seasonality, 6560 (43.5%) of all fully functional water points are reported to have water throughout the year.
