ABOUT NWASHC

The National Water, Sanitation & Hygiene Commission (NWSHC) of Liberia stands as a vital governmental body, entrusted with the crucial mandate of ensuring universal access to safe water, adequate sanitation, and sound hygiene practices for every citizen of Liberia. Officially established under the National Water, Sanitation & Hygiene Commission Act of 2012, the NWSHC marked its operational inception in 2017, solidifying its position as a fully functional institution in 2018.
At the heart of the NWSHC’s endeavors lies a profound mission: to safeguard and enhance the health and overall well-being of the Liberian people through the diligent and effective management and sustainable development of comprehensive WASH services. Recognizing that access to clean water and sanitation is are fundamental human right and a critical driver of socio-economic progress, the commission operates with a deep sense of responsibility and a long-term vision for a healthier and more prosperous Liberia.

The NWSHC understands that the complexities of water and sanitation challenges necessitate a collaborative and multi-faceted approach. To this end, the commission actively cultivates and nurtures strong partnerships with a diverse range of stakeholders. These include various government ministries, fostering inter-sectoral coordination, and ensuring that WASH initiatives are integrated into broader national development strategies. Furthermore, the NWSHC collaborates closely with international partners, leveraging their expertise, resources, and best practices to enhance the effectiveness and sustainability of its programs. Crucially, the commission recognizes the indispensable role of local communities in the success of WASH interventions, actively engaging with them to understand their specific needs, build local ownership, and empower them to manage their WASH resources effectively.
The NWSHC’s commitment extends beyond simply providing access to basic WASH facilities. A core principle guiding its work is the development of sustainable solutions. This entails not only the construction and maintenance of infrastructure but also the implementation of capacity-building programs, hygiene education campaigns, and the promotion of community-led management models. By empowering communities with the knowledge, skills, and resources to manage their own WASH systems, the NWSHC aims to create a lasting impact and ensure the long-term functionality and resilience of WASH services across Liberia.
The ultimate aspiration of the National Water, Sanitation & Hygiene Commission is to improve the quality of life for all Liberians tangibly. Access to safe water reduces the incidence of waterborne diseases, leading to improved public health outcomes and increased productivity. Adequate sanitation facilities ensure dignity, safety, and a healthier environment, particularly for women and children. The promotion of hygiene practices, such as handwashing, plays a critical role in preventing the spread of infections and fostering a culture of health consciousness.

In its relatively short operational history, the NWSHC has emerged as a pivotal institution in Liberia’s journey towards achieving universal access to WASH services. Its dedication to collaboration, sustainability, and community empowerment underscores its commitment to creating a healthier, more equitable, and more prosperous future for all Liberian citizens. As the commission continues to grow and evolve, its unwavering focus on its core mission promises to bring about significant and lasting improvements in the lives of the people it serves, contributing to the overall development and well-being of the nation.
