National WASH Commission and UNICEF Reinforce Joint Commitment to WASH Progress in Liberia

In a significant move to reinforce collaborative efforts aimed at improving Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) services across Liberia, the National Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Commission (NWASHC) on Thursday, April 17, 2025, hosted a high-level delegation from the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) at its national headquarters on 18th Street, Sinkor.
Held in the Commission’s Conference Room, the meeting brought together key representatives from UNICEF and the WASH Commission to engage in constructive dialogue around several critical initiatives currently shaping Liberia’s WASH landscape. The discussions focused on strengthening joint efforts, identifying synergies, and aligning strategies to accelerate progress toward national and global WASH targets.
Among the key initiatives discussed were:

  1. The Climate Rationale for WASH – A forward-thinking initiative that seeks to integrate climate change mitigation strategies into ongoing WASH interventions, ensuring resilience and sustainability in service delivery.
  2. The Open Defecation Free (ODF) Roadmap – A national guiding document designed to eliminate open defecation across Liberia, with a goal of fostering healthier communities through improved sanitation practices.
  3. The Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) Evaluation Report – A comprehensive evaluation intended to inform UNICEF representatives and technical teams as they work to update and strengthen the national ODF roadmap.
  4. The Presidential WASH Compact – A strategic commitment from the highest level of government aimed at galvanizing efforts and resources across sectors to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation for all.

Representing the WASH Commission were Chief Executive Officer Mr. George W.K. Yarngo and Executive Director Mr. Morris Gono Jr., both of whom reaffirmed the Commission’s dedication to sustainable development and improved public health outcomes.
We are grateful for the continued partnership with UNICEF, whose support has been instrumental in advancing WASH services in Liberia, said Mr. Yarngo. Together, we are paving the way for a future where every Liberian has access to clean water, safe sanitation, and proper hygiene.”
The WASH Commission extends heartfelt appreciation to UNICEF-Liberia for its unwavering collaboration and support. As the nation moves forward, the Commission remains committed to fostering inclusive, climate-resilient, and community-driven approaches to WASH that enhance the quality of life for all Liberians.
